Home About Us Farmer Training Farming Network Community Food Systems Projects Resources

Food Works is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization facilitating the development of a regional food economy in Southern Illinois. We believe that a truly enduring approach emphasizes access to good food for everyone, keeps food dollars circulating in local communities, and balances human needs with the health of the air, water and land resources on which all life depends.

Food Works envisions a region where:

  • Local farmers have access to education they need to be economically, ecologically, and socially sustainable.
  • The community has greater access to food that is grown on local, sustainable farms.
  • Community members have a better understanding of the value of locally grown food.

Is Entrepreneurial Farming for You?

Food Works is offering the four-hour, intensive Small Farm Dreams workshop this summer. The cost is $30, which includes a light supper. Additional farm partners pay only $10. Online pre-registration is required. Small Farm Dreams features a panel of experienced sustainable farmers sharing stories of the successes and failures of operating a small farm business. Workshop participants will learn about a variety of farm enterprises and be able to ask questions about the genesis and development of successful farm businesses. The workshop will also cover resource assessment, goal setting, financial planning and marketing.

For more information about the workshop, contact Kathleen Logan Smith,
email kathleen(at)eatsouthernillinois(dot)org or call 618/370-3287.

The next Small Farm Dreams workshop will be Monday, June 1st, 5-9 p.m. on a farm near Carbondale, IL.
